FG,WHO holds bilateral meeting on SURGE Initiative In Yobe

Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH)in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO) Scoping mission team on strengthening and Utilizing Response Groups for Emergencies (SURGE) Initiative Monday held bilateral mission meeting with Yobe State Ministry of Health as part of the effort to commence the SURGE initiative programme in the state.

Speaking on the Initiative,the Coordinator WHO Yobe state,Dr. Nuhu Barau Ningi said,SURGE is an initiative to ensure readiness to address emergencies as they occur immediately.

Mr Ningi noted that,the initiative is started actually by WHO to support member states so that deaths and casualties will be reduced as a result of Emergencies.

"This SURGE is just started with 6 states in the country,one state per geo political zone to commence the SURGE and luckily Yobe state happened to be one selected in the north East region",Said Yobe WHO Coordinator.

In his remarks,Yobe State Commissioner of Health,Dr.Mohammed Lawan Gana commended Federal Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation (WHO) for selecting and including Yobe state among the six 6 states phase 1 Flagship Implementation state for the Strengthening And Utilizing Response Groups For Emergencies (SURGE) initiative.

The health Commissioner revealed that,Yobe state recognises the need to strengthen the state health system to be able to detect, prevent and respond to emergencies within the shortest possible time.

"Yobe state government has put in place a lot of preventive and curative public interventions to improve access to health care and emergency services",said Dr Lawan Gana.

Earlier speaking,the Chief Consultant Epidemiology of Nigeria, federal ministry of health who is the team led,Dr. Goodwin Ntadom said,SURGE initiative promotes a well- equipped team within a streamlined support system able to respond to public health Emergencies within the first 24-48 hours.

"It is therefore welcome as an intervention that can turn around the detection and respond time for Emergencies within the country and beyond in the entire african region.

Mr. Ntodom stated that,"this is not only the federal ministry of health ,we have other Ministries such as humanitarian, Agric among others,we are working together as a team to provide both logistics, resources,, technical manpower to ensure that we have any challenges in any part of the country would be able to stand".
