Diphtheria:Social Mobilization Committee meets in Yobe

Social mobilisation Community at the emergency meeting on diphtheria out break in Yobe

Yobe state social mobilisation and community engagement sub working group has on Thursday held an emergency meeting  held at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) in new Bra-Bra housing estate Damaturu. 

The meeting which was chaired by the  Committee's chairperson
and director information services from the state Ministry fro home affairs, information and culture,Hajiya Husna Ibrahim said the meeting is aimed at coming up with effective ways to educate and sensitive people on diphtheria and how to curtails it spread across the state.

According the the committee chairperson,diphtheria is an acute and highly contagious bacterial disease that course inflammation of nervous membranes in the throat which hinders breathing and swallowing, potentially fatal heart and nerve damage by a bacterial toxic in the blood.

She said the outbreak of this infectious disease affects the nose and throats which can be easily prevented is recorded in some part of Yobe state.

Husna revealed that,this called for an emergency meeting by the state social mobilisation and community engagement sub working Committee to review the work of the committee and come up with strategies  of effective communication about the disease.

According to the chairperson,the meeting is also to communicate and educates on the dangers of the disease as well as to curtails its going viral amongst people.

She further revealed that, the state has recorded some action cases of the disease in some part of the state hence the need for the committee to meet for necessary action.

"The committee consist of stakeholders from  all the line ministries,health sector, development partners and journalist who gave an update on their engagement in curtailing the spread of the disease. 

"Part of the successes of the  committee on risk communication is communicating to religious leaders, engagement of house to house mobilisers where 1085 volunteer Community mobilisers  and 108 volunteer wards supervisors across the 17 LGAs in the state where achieved among other measures taken to stop the spread of this out break",said the Husna Ibrahim.
