In an effort to combating desertification, desert encroachment, drought and other climate change-induced challenges in the state,Governor Mai Mala Buni  has Thursday flagging-off tree planting campaign for the year 2023.

With its theme of this year’s campaign ‘’Plant a tree today for our sustainable future and development’’,the event took place at kukareta village in damaturu local government area.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Buni said, the World is currently passing through an unprecedented challenge of rising temperatures and heat waves in many parts of the globe which has resulted in devastating wildfires, serious displacement of people and other humanitarian crises.

He stated that, here in Nigeria, particularly in the frontline States, the rainy season this year has been unusually delayed and characterized by long periods of dry spells right from its beginning.

The Governor further revealed that, this has generated a lot of concerns and therefore, underlined the fact that the climate change issue is real and we should all endeavour to thwart the challenge by adopting positive attitudes such as massive tree planting, avoidance of indiscriminate felling of trees and effective enlightenment on the dangers of negative human activities to the environment.

Buni enjoined all the 17 Local Government Caretaker Committees, the Ministry of Environment and its agencies as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information and Culture and media in the state outfits to intensify sensitization and enlightenment of the general public on tree planting and prevention of negative human practices against the environment.

"our traditional rulers should continue to play their pivotal role in the mobilization of their communities for increased vegetation cover in their respective domains",said Governor Buni.
