Damaturu FlyOver:Gov.Buni's Visionary Leap Toward a Futuristic Project
By Yusuf Ali
When Damaturu was chosen as the capital of Yobe State in 1991,it was little more than a glorified local government headquarters. With only one roundabout and an almost non-existent housing infrastructure, the task before Bukar Abba Ibrahim, the first executive governor, was daunting.
The capital was dusty lacked basic amenities, and the state was struggling to accommodate its newly deployed civil servants. Many of them had no choice but to sleep in makeshift arrangements, including classrooms in schools.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim launched an ambitious housing program. His administration began building houses for civil servants, a move some critics dismissed as a misplacement of priority, arguing that the houses were unnecessary since there were not enough people to occupy them.
However, history has vindicated Governor Bukar's foresight. Those very houses sold on owner-occupier basis on 50% discount are now home to thousands of families, forming the backbone of a thriving community in Damaturu.
Similarly,Governor Ibrahim Gaidam faced criticism when he laid the foundation for the Damaturu Cargo International Airport, a project many viewed as extravagant and unnecessary at the time.
However, the airport has since emerged as one of the state’s most critical assets, that will position Yobe as a hub for regional trade and logistics. With Gov. Buni's partnership, the airport will play a vital role in opening up the state for export in sesame, solid minerals, and livestock development.
Building on the legacies of his predecessors, Gov. Buni has taken a visionary approach by embarking on the construction of the Damaturu Flyover—a project that represents a bold step toward positioning the capital as a futuristic city.
Much like the housing initiative of Bukar Abba Ibrahim and the Cargo Airport by Ibrahim Gaidam, the flyover has faced its share of skepticism. However, Governor Buni understands that true leadership is about planning for tomorrow, not just addressing the immediate needs of today.
The Damaturu Flyover is more than a structure; it is a symbol of progress, designed to improve urban aesthetics, and prepare the city for the demands of a growing population and economy.
As critics question the necessity of such a project, the lessons of the past remind us that today's visionaries often see what others cannot. Gov. Buni’s investment in the flyOver is a testament to his commitment to laying the foundation for a modern and dynamic Yobe State.
Just as Bukar Abba's housing initiative has stood the test of time, providing shelter and stability for countless families, and Gaidam’s Cargo Airport has become a critical economic asset, so too will the Damaturu FlyOver stand as a lasting legacy of Gov. Buni’s administration—a gateway to a brighter and more prosperous future for Damaturu and its people Insha Allah.
