The Community of Practice (CoP) led by its team leader visited Azbak community to oversee the ongoing construction of Junior and Senior Staff Quarters at Government Science and Technical College (GSTC) Gashua, Bade Local Government area of Yobe state.

The visit to communities was aimed at deepening accountability, enhancing social inclusion system and promoting resilience and sustainability in governance across Nigeria.

Upon their arrival, the team met with the school principal to discuss the project.

The principal, Mallam Musa Ali, expressed surprise about the 2023 construction allocation for Yobe North Constituency, saying there had been no government projects at the school since 2018.

The principal highlighted ongoing efforts to secure government support for classroom and hostel renovations, as well as the construction of staff quarters.

He emphasized the school’s challenges, adding that,”GSTC Gashua currently accommodating over 4,000 students, lacks adequate hostels, functional staff quarters and Some students resort to using classrooms as makeshift hostels, while staff commute  daily from Gashua and Azbak towns. These deficiencies severely affect teaching and learning”.

The CoP team also learned about other infrastructure challenges, including limited water supply and electricity shortages, which impact students health and practical education.

The CoP team also meets with the azbak community leader, Malam Lawan Yahaya, where he confirmed that he has no knowledge of the staff quarters project or any engagement with contractors for community projects.

He highlighted overcrowded classrooms and inadequate accommodation as major obstacles to quality education in Azbak .

The team also engaged youths from the community through training on how to nominate and tract projects(NomTrac).
