5,340 farmers to benefit from Mega Agricultural Scheme in Yobe

As part of the efforts to boost agricultural activities and enhance food security in the state,President Ahmed Bola Tinubu  has on Saturday launched a Multi -billion naira agricultural empowerment scheme in Yobe state.

The agricultural empowerment scheme initiated by Governor Mai Mala Buni distributed to 30 farmers in each of the 178 electoral wards of the State making a total of 5,340 farmers to benefit from the scheme.Except for the tractors and fertilizer, all the other agricultural equipment and inputs are to be given out free to the large scale, medium and subsistence farmers.

Speaking at the launching of agricultural scheme at the August 27th stadium, Damaturu, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu said,Yobe state agricultural empowerment initiated by Governor Mai Mala Buni would of course solved problem of food security not only in the state but the North East region in general.

Represented by the vice President,Senator Kashim Shettima,Tinubu said,the provisions of massive agricultural machines and implements by the Yobe State government would no doubt despite agricultural revolution in the state,people at the end would have a sufficient food to run for their households.

"We have recently approved the creation of ministry of livestock development,this is intended to improve livestock production in the county and we are taking measures to address challenges to make farm land save  and accessible in every states of the federation m",said President Tinubu.

Earlier in his welcome address Governor Mai Mala Buni reassured  president Ahmed Bola Tinubu that,the good people of Yobe state would continue to support his administration as he strive to improve the economy,security and other developmental challenges facing the nation.

Buni noted that,Yobe State is one of the states grossly devastated by protracted security challenge.The inaccessibility to farmlands due to security threat and other natural factors such as erosion, desert encroachment, low rainfall have massively affected agricultural productivity with monumental consequences on the lives of the predominantly agricultural population, and the economy of the state.

He noted that,In spite of all the challenges, agriculture remains the major preoccupation of our people.With the improvement in security across the state,farmlands are now accessible in almost all the local government areas.

"The Yobe State Government in collaboration with the Federal Government has established Livestock Development Centers (LDCs) to curb farmers/ herdsmen clashes,commercial pasture production, and increase in meat and dairy production.

"The State is currently reviving 2000 hectares Lava Irrigation Scheme in Bursari Local Government Area to cultivate wheat, rice and vegetables in the next dry season irrigation programme",said Gov.Buni

The launched agricultural empowerment programme items by president Tinubu includes;distribution of 100 Zoom Lion Tractors,10 IMC Double Cabin 4 wheel drive vehicles for supervision of the extension service workers and 200 motor cycles to extension service workers to boost agricultural extension services.

Others are;300 sets of Ox-drawn ploughs, 5,349 small ruminants (goats), 1,349 hand push planters, 889 hand-push plough machines, 590 hand-push tiller machines, 4,202 solar-powered irrigation water pumps, improved assorted seeds and 72,000 bags of fertilizer, among others.
