Yobe L-PRES Project Hands Over Livestock Market to Geidam Community
The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), a World Bank-funded program, has commissioned and handed over a modern livestock market to the Geidam local government area of Yobe State.
The market, located at the Nigeria-Niger border, is expected to boost livestock trade between the two countries and create jobs.
The market covers a 400m x 400m area, with features including perimeter fencing, gates, security outpost, veterinary clinic, administrative block, solar-powered boreholes, and drinking points. Other amenities include loading and off-loading ramps, toilets, and a livestock weighing scale.
Project Coordinator Adama Hussaini Madaki said the market would strengthen livestock trade and improve revenue generation. L-PRES Value Chain Officer Usman Magaji noted that the market would expand the local government area's market horizon, making it a livestock hub.
Representing Governor Mai Mala Buni, Permanent Secretary Dr. Musa Abba Kolere said the project would create jobs and improve revenue generation.
He emphasized the importance of livestock markets in socio-economic development, highlighting benefits such as revenue generation, employment opportunities, food security, and market access.
The Director Personnel Management of Geidam local government area, Abubakar Suleiman, thanked the governor for selecting Geidam for the project and urged livestock traders to relocate to the new market, citing the provided infrastructure and security.
