Protect schools against attack,Group urges Government

The Nigerian Education in Emergencies Working group, a coordinator body of the United Nations and other partners providing support on education, is asking the Yobe state government to ensure safety of pupils and students ahead of school resumption.

The Coordinator of the group, Baba Shehu disclosed this at the commemoration of the International Day to protect Schools from Attacks in Damaturu the state capital.

The commemoration was organized in partnership with the Save the Children International" among other partners to provide pupils and students a conducive learning environment which is free from fear of attack or molestation during emergencies.

“It is a commemoration of the International day to protect education from attack which is a United Nations General Assembly declaration since 2020 to ensure even in the face of crisis and conflict access to education is continued”

“The theme for this year is "financing for the safety and security of schools". That is why we are commemorating the day through advocacy to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as well as the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), he said.

The Programme Manager of Save the Children International, Iliya Joseph explained the aim of the commemoration was to bring the stakeholders together to have a commitment to protect schools from attack.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bukar Aji pledges government's support in ensuring schools safety.

“The safety and well-being of the students are the most important concern to parents, educators and policy makers worldwide.”  Creating a secured and safe learning environment is essential for the holistic development and they represent the fundamental commitment as safety is criteria commitment of learning”

“In Yobe state we have been providing safety to our schools in collaboration with our security agencies to enjoy conducive learning environment” he said

With this kind of advocacy and sensitization, it is believed the rampant attacks on schools would be reduced, especially when drastic measures are taken.
