Yobe Journalists trains on Media Advocacy for Child Spacing

In an effort to improve maternal and child health,reducing poverty,and promoting economic growth in the state,Development Communications (DevComs) with the support of The Challenge Initiative (TCI)has on Wednesday commenced a 3-day training for journalists and social media influencers on Media advocacy for  reproductive health including child spacing aspect in Yobe state.

Speaking during the training in Damaturu,the TCI state program manager,Dr.Philemon Yohanna said,the training is aimed to facilitate scale up of media  engagement in enhancing policy commitment, action and community support for increase accessibility and acceptability to appropriate child spacing   information and services in the state.

He stated that,the training is also to empower journalists with the tools and knowledge to advocate for positive  behavioural change and foster informed public discourse on child spacing among other reproductive health.

Yohanna revealed that,the initiative being implemented by the Development Communications Network (DevComs) is supported by The Challenge Initiative (TIC) Nigeria,managed by the Johns Hopkins centre for communication programme (CCP).

In her  presentation,Yobe State Reproductive Health Coordinator, Primary Healthcare Management Board,(YSPHCB) Mairo Yakubu Hassan explained some of the benefits of the Child birth spacing in the society.

According to the reproductive health officer,Child birth spacing "reduces child and maternal mortality,reduces poverty to the bearest minimum,support education especially for the women and girls,contributes to increase nutrition outcome in addition to  saving  lives".

Earlier in her introduction,the Social Behavioral Change and communication Specialist -State Technical Lead TIC,Ndyip Balat noted that,the training will build the capacity of journalists in media advocacy, strategic communication planning,and engaging with policymakers.

She further revealed that,"the training will also equipped the journalists skills on community engagement strategies to promote dialogue,dispel myths, and address cultural barriers".

In her remarks,the DevComs Media Consultant in the state,Comfort Mokolo revealed that,the program will be closely monitored to track progress and effectiveness and ensuring sustainable impact beyond it's duration.

"DevComs is playing leading role in promoting public health and social development communications to ensure an informed society and better policies that have direct impact to  citizens",she added.
