Yobe Journalists train on disease outbreak reporting

Journalists in Yobe state has changed to approach their reporting on healthcare and disease outbreak with the utmost professionalism and integrity as their reports can influence public behavior, government policies, and even global responses to health crises.
The Yobe State Director of Information and Chairman State Social Mobilisation and Community Engagement Working Group (SM&CEWG),Ali Musa Yawale made the called in Damaturu at a one-day media orientation Organized by the Primary Healthcare Board in partnership with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Yawale said,due to changed in weather,it is obvious that places like Yobe state may experience some disease outbreak that require all hands on deck approach to either contain or control its spread.
He stated that, In an age where information spreads rapidly and misinformation can have serious consequences,the role of journalists in disseminating accurate and reliable information is more crucial than ever.
He noted that,Journalists as stakeholders,they have the power to shape public perception and understanding of healthcare issues and disease outbreaks.
He revealed that, when reporting on healthcare and disease outbreaks,it is essential to verify information from multiple credible sources before disseminating it to the public and avoid sensationalism, speculation,and stick to the facts.Misinformation and rumors can cause panic and confusion, and they have no place in responsible journalism.
"On context,is good to provide your audience with a clear understanding of the scientific background and context of the healthcare issue or disease outbreak you are reporting on.Explain complex concepts in simple terms,and highlight the potential implications for public health and safety.As journalists your reporting should empower your audience to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.It is important to prioritize the voices of experts and authorities in your reporting.
"Seek out interviews with healthcare professionals, epidemiologists,and government officials who can provide expert analysis and insight into the situation.Their expertise will lend credibility to your reporting and help to counteract misinformation and rumors.
"On human aspect of healthcare reporting, be reminded that behind every statistic and medical term, there are real people whose lives are affected by the issues you are reporting on. Share their stories with empathy and sensitivity,while respecting their privacy and dignity",said the Director information
He urged the Journalists to approach their reporting on healthcare and disease outbreaks with the utmost professionalism and integrity adding that, their work has the power to inform, educate,and even save lives.
