ICRC, Nigerian Agencies Pilot Mass Fatality Plan in Yobe with Simulation Exercise(Pictures)

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in partnership with Nigerian emergency management agencies, conducted a full-scale simulation exercise on Monday to test a new Mass Fatality Response Plan, aiming to enhance the country's preparedness for large-scale tragic events.

The exercise, organized in collaboration with the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), was designed to train frontline responders in managing mass casualty incidents.

In a statement,Rashid Hassan, the ICRC Head of Sub-delegation in Damaturu, highlighted the urgent need for such a plan. He noted that Nigeria has faced a rising number of mass fatalities stemming not only from conflict but also from disasters like explosions, floods, building collapses, and epidemics.

"These events have left families grieving, communities devastated, and entire regions in mourning," Hassan said.

Hassan explained that a key humanitarian goal is to prevent people from going missing, which includes the dignified identification of the deceased. He emphasized that an effective response requires a coordinated effort from multiple actors working jointly.

"The aim of the guidelines is not only operational efficiency but also to uphold the humanity and identity of every life lost," Hassan added. He described the plan as a "pathway to restoring dignity to the dead and hope to the living," ensuring that even in chaotic situations, actions are taken with professionalism and respect.

The ICRC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the implementation of the plan within its mandate, pledging continued support to NEMA, SEMA, and other technical partners to ensure the necessary tools, training, and systems are functional.
