Two hundred young innovators from across Nigeria’s six northeastern states converged on the Yobe State capital this week to showcase how small grants and big ideas are tackling deep rooted governance challenges in their communities.
The North East Youth Idea Summit, themed "Transforming Nigeria's Local Governance: Harnessing AI and Youth Innovation for Transparency," served as a celebration of grassroots problem solving.
Organized by the Spotlight for Transparency and Accountability Initiative, the event highlighted a powerful truth, modest funding, when paired with youthful energy, can produce extraordinary results.
Mu’azu Alhaji Modu, CEO of Spotlight, revealed that 25 exceptional youths were selected as Civic Innovation Awardees of Dr. Kole Shettima received $100 grants (roughly ₦140,000) each to launch community projects. The outcomes, he noted, have far exceeded expectations.
"We gave them seed money, and they built superb digital systems. These young people achieve what millions in funding cannot achieve without sheer dedication," said Mu'azu.
He noted that 25 fellows received $100 to implement localized civic projects, while four challenge victors secured ₦500,000 each for developing advanced digital platforms.
He further revealed that among the standout innovations were budget solution apps designed to help citizens track government spending, healthcare applications that aid basic medical services in underserved areas, and an interactive game called Civic Play, which educates young people on civic duties and community participation.
Modu noted that last year’s event inspired two participants to apply for the fellowship, who subsequently returned this year with impressive success stories.
In an interview with our Correspondent, Richard Chidibere, Grants Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF) explained,a LEAP Africa initiative backed by the MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Luminate Group introduced attendees to Bayani, an artificial intelligence tool built by the 25 fellows.
"The concept came from young coworkers trained across six northeastern cities. They were given local funds to launch projects, and today we are affirming that this is a positive contribution from the northeast. It portrays the region with a vibrancy rarely seen internationally, showing a strong appetite for civic participation and tech driven design," said Chidibere.
The summit also brought together government officials and youth leaders to brainstorm solutions for the region’s most pressing challenges.
