Yobe State University officially welcomed 2,240 students into its degree programs during its 18th matriculation ceremony on Tuesday urging the new intakes to prioritize entrepreneurial skills and steer clear of misconduct.

Held on the university campus, the event marked the academic commencement for students across the institution’s seven faculties and the College of Medical Sciences.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir stressed a strategic shift away from over-reliance on public sector jobs.

He said the university is intensifying its emphasis on entrepreneurship and hands-on training to prepare graduates for self-employment and success in the private sector.

“Our aim is not just to prepare them for government jobs. We want to produce graduates who can create employment or seamlessly integrate into private enterprises,” Professor Tahir stated.

He praised the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) as a crucial support system for students facing financial challenges.

However, he issued a stern warning against examination malpractice and drug abuse, stating that offenders would face decisive disciplinary action.

In his remarks, the University Registrar Alhaji Isa Audu Dallari congratulated the matriculating students, describing the ceremony as a significant milestone, and urged them to adhere strictly to the university’s regulations.

Earlier,Professor Sani Isah, Dean of Students Affairs, advised freshers to balance their academic responsibilities with co-curricular activities, cautioning against excessive social media use and entertainment that could detract from their studies.

A faculty wise breakdown of the new intake shows the Faculty of Sciences leading with 935 students, followed by the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences with 525.

The College of Medical Sciences admitted 465, while Education, Arts, Law, and Agriculture recorded 121, 74, 67, and 53 students, respectively.
